Parolee In Jail For Meth Possession Might Face Littering Charge

khts_crime_chpCalifornia Highway Patrol officers spent some time Tuesday on roadside cleanup, but they weren’t picking up trash.

They were recovering about $100,000 worth of crystal methamphetamine thrown out the window during a pursuit.

About 11:35 a.m., officers saw a 2007 Chevy Tahoe speed down northbound Lyons Avenue in excess of 65 MPH and attempted to stop the driver, Ruben Ralph Moreno.

Moreno drove onto the northbound I-5 and as he continued to speed, rolled down the driver’s side window and began throwing out several large plastic bags that contained crystal methamphetamine, which landed on the roadway.

He continued to drive north into Kern County, where he voluntarily stopped at the junction of State Route 166, where he was taken into custody without further incident.

The total length of the pursuit was 55 miles. Northbound I-5 in the Castaic area was closed for approximately 20 minutes to allow officers to collect the evidence. The estimated street value of the methamphetamine is $100,000.

No injuries or damage to CHP personnel or suspect were reported. Moreno was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s station on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine. As he is a parolee, Moreno remains in custody on a no-bail hold.
