Patrol Deputies Nab Warrant Suspect In Traffic Stop

khts_crimeTwo deputies on patrol Tuesday afternoon made a routine traffic stop in Newhall and ended up arresting a drug user who had two outstanding warrants.

Deputies Dubin and Jones were patrolling the area of Newhall Avenue and Market Street when they saw a red and white van run a stop sign while turning right.

When the deputies approached the driver, they smelled burnt marijuana. During a search of the vehicle they located a purse and a syringe containing what appeared to be methamphetamine. There were also numerous prescription pills in a metal container and a small amount of marijuana. The pills appear to be generic forms of Vicodin and Dilaudid.

The owner of the purse gave deputies a false name. Her identification was located during the search and it was discovered that she had two outstanding arrest warrants.

In addition to the charges she faces with the two warrants, Alonna Hays, 27, of Chatsworth, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of narcotic paraphernalia, illegal possession of prescription medications and giving false information to a peace officer.

It was determined that the driver of the van was not involved in any criminal activity. A passenger in the vehicle, a male 16-year-old, was cited for possession of a cigarette lighter and released to his parent.

Hays is being held at Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood in lieu of $65,000 bail. The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time.
