Person Killed By Metrolink Train In Canyon Country

Fatal accident occurred on tracks in Santa Clarita.

UPDATED Wednesday, April 1, 1:04 p.m.

Coroner’s officials said that the man hit by a Metrolink train at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday remains unidentified, with only his race – Caucasian – known.

The man was struck and killed by a Metrolink train on the tracks 3 miles from the Via Princessa station between Oak Springs Canyon and Lost Canyon Roads in Canyon Country.

According to Captain Ed Winter of the Coroner’s office, the engineer said the man was laying across the tracks with his head on one rail and his feet on the other, his arms crossed beneath his head. Winter said the man’s body was severely damaged.

He added that the case was being considered a suicide.

Metrolink line 215 was the train involved in the accident, which Metrolink is calling a “trespasser fatality.”

Metrolink spokesman Francisco Oxaca said the train was unable to stop before hitting the man.

“When the train came around the bend, the engineer saw a man on the tracks and began sounding the horn and applying the brakes,” Oxaca said. “A couple of hoses from the braking system beneath the train disconnected as the train went over the victim.”

He said that crews immediately exited the train to see what happened and found that the man died instantly.

Oxaca added that passengers were held on the train until after 10 p.m. to allow the coroner and homicide investigators to examine the scene. The coroner arrived at the scene at approximately 9 p.m.

According to Oxaca, the passengers were not in a safe area for evacuation, so they were required to stay on the train until the investigators allowed the train to proceed to its destination. Adding to the delay was the fact that federal law required a new train crew be brought on board to move the train after 10 p.m., since the original crew had worked its allotted hours.
