Do you have a member of the military in your family? It
doesn’t matter if they’re active duty, reserve, retired, fallen heroes or
simply a veteran who served their country in one of the branches of the Armed
Forces – the Prayer Angels For the Military and Blue Star Mothers of the
Canyons want their picture for the community’s Holiday Tree.

The tree, a soaring pine planted at the Historical
Veterans Plaza
in downtown Newhall, will be decorated with red, white and blue lights by the
two groups, who are soliciting pictures that will be laminated onto blue stars
and white angels.

Suzon Gerstel of the Prayer Angels said that the tree will
be lit during a public ceremony at 7 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 13 and will remain lit through the month of December.

“People can drive by and see the lights and it will remind
them to say a prayer for those troops who are still serving in harm’s way,” she
said.

Photographs can be submitted electronically to either bluestarcanyons@yahoo.com or prayerangelsforthemilitary@yahoo.com
and should include the service person’s name, rank and branch of service. Hard
copy photographs may be submitted, check websites for mailing instructions.
Photos will be returned.

At the Dec. 13 ceremony, entertainer and playwright Marilyn
Hackett will be among performers singing holiday songs. The event will also
feature speakers, music, carolers and lighting of the tree, which is more than
25 feet high.

The event is a collaborative effort of the Historical
Veterans Memorial Committee, Blue Star Mothers Chapters 82 and 91 and Prayer
Angels For the Military. The entire community is invited to join along in
honoring all the military while sharing some holiday cheer. Refreshments will
be served.
