Pitchess Escapee Faces 50 Years In Robbery Conviction

khts_crimeOne of two men who escaped last week from Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic, where they were being held during their trial was found guilty today on multiple counts of armed robbery.

Jurors deliberated about one day before finding Winder Estuardo Barrios, 24, guilty of all 15 counts, including home invasion robbery, false imprisonment by violence, assault with a firearm and 10 counts of second-degree robbery, said Deputy District Attorney Mario Haidar. The seven-man, five-woman jury also found true the special allegations that Barrios personally used a firearm, a shotgun.

Barrios returns to court on June 25 for sentencing by Judge Sam Ohta. He faces up to 50 years in state prison.

Barrios was one of two men charged with the March 27, 2009, home invasion robbery in Encino in which the housekeeper and the homeowner’s daughter were tied up at gunpoint. TV’s and computers were stolen from the home. He also was convicted of pulling a string of armed robberies a day earlier in the Hollywood area.

A second jury is still deliberating in the case of co-defendant Jose Antonio Aldana, 24.

Barrios and Aldana escaped from the North County Correctional Facility near Castaic on April 28 where they were being held during their trial. They were arrested several hours later not far from the facility. Charges have not been filed in connection with the escape.
