Political Posturing Hijacks City Council Meeting

Buck McKeon finds himself at the center of public comment.

[view:node_ad=5]Republicans and Democrats gathered at City Council chambers
Tuesday night to take over the public comment period to discuss national
politics.

Some said that McKeon's vote against the federal stimulus package
and his words describing that legislation were "disappointing." They also asked
for the City Council to publicly disapprove of McKeon's actions.

Others came in support of McKeon, saying that he did what
residents elected him to do.

Mostly, the discussion was ideological, with residents expressing
their support or opposition to the recently passed stimulus package.

ImageThe political posturing resulted in a long public comment period
where no issue was raised of direct importance to City business. Therefore the
City Council concluded the meeting without action.

Earlier in the Council session, a unanimous vote approved
the formation of a Materials Recovery Facility Site Selection Committee. Two Council
members will hold seats on this committee, along with 14 other community
members representing groups, committees and geographical areas from across the
Santa Clarita valley.

Finding a site for the facility has proven to be of great
interest to residents, as all of our valley's trash will be sorted and separated
in the building. Increased truck traffic, noise, and quality of life concerns
will drive the effort to find a mutually agreeable location.

Tuesday's meeting also served as a place for the Sheriff's
department to award a local man with their highest civilian honor. Find out
what he did to deserve it by reading the full article .
