While Santa Clarita voters are more than six months away from their first say in the 2018 25th District Congressional race, the fundraising race is clearly heating up.

More than $750,000 was contributed to the race between the four candidates who filed their financial statements for the seat. (A Facebook page also follows the 25th District race.)

The incumbent, Congressman Steve Knight, R-Palmdale, still has the largest war chest for what’s expected to be another contentious fight for the 25th Congressional District seat.

However, two of his Democratic Party challengers have proven to be effective fundraisers — one challenger edged Knight for the last quarter, according to Federal Election Commission campaign reports filed by the candidates.

The FEC reports searchable here show Knight has a little over $595,000 in cash on hand for his campaign, compared to $292,445 for Bryan Caforio, who was Knight’s challenger in November 2016; and $267,588 for Katie Hill. Jess Phoenix, who’s also seeking the seat as a Democrat, has $25,300 left after raising $49,182.

Several news reports also made note of the significant fundraising gains made in a short time by Hill, and also by Caforio, whose totals for the previous quarter exceeded Knight’s.

Knight tallied receipts totalling $240,306 for his fundraising efforts in the previous quarter, while Caforio raised $241,103, and Hill came in third at $223,703.

While Knight runs unopposed within the Republican Party, Caforio, Hill and Phoenix are all members of the Democratic Party.

In next year’s June 5 primary race, all six challengers will run against one another, and the top two will face off in the November 6, 2018, general election.

Knight took over the 25th Congressional District seat in 2014, after his predecessor, Buck McKeon, retired following his 11th term in office.

Knight defeated Caforio in 2016 with a margin of 53.1 percent to 46.9 percent.
