The senior Arizona Senator, who died at the age of 81, was a naval bomber pilot, prisoner of war and twice-beaten presidential candidate.

In July 2017, McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer. Doctors discovered the tumor during a medical procedure to remove a blood clot from above his left eye.

In his last hours, the Arizona senator turned down further treatment.

“In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival,” said the McCain family in a statement. “But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict.”

He leaves behind seven children and his wife, Cindy McCain.

“I love my husband with all of my heart. God bless everyone who has cared for my husband along this journey,” Cindy said.

Congressman Steve Knight (R), has since commented on the passing of Senator McCain.

“Throughout his entire life, John McCain exemplified the honor, dignity, and values we cherish as Americans,” Knight said. “A hero of the Vietnam War and a dedicated public servant in the Senate, he is a patriot of the highest order. May he rest in peace and may God bless his family.”
