The proposed section of the railway would close the current gap between the Central Valley and Southern California caused by the Tehachapi mountains.

Other sections of the state’s high-speed railway are expected to bypass Santa Clarita with the nearest stations planned to be located in Palmdale and Burbank.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority believes that by 2029 the rail system will provide commuters between San Francisco and Los Angeles a travel time of less than 3 hours. They further plan to extend the system to the cities of Sacramento and San Diego.

The Bakersfield to Palmdale high-speed rail will likely pass through or near the cities of Tehachapi, Rosemond, Lancaster, Palmdale and Bakersfield.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority currently expects the cost of the first 119-miles of construction to increase by $2.8 billion from previous estimates. In 2016, officials expected the project to cost a total of $64.2 billion.

Commute times for this section of railway are expected to be 20-25 minutes when the project is completed, according to California High-Speed Rail Authority officials.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority plans to include the new estimates in their 2018 business plan, which is expected to reach legislators this spring. They plan to further explain the reasons for the increased costs in the plan.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority reports that despite these increased cost estimates, they are still within the funds allocated by the state and federal governments.

On Jan. 16, the California High-Speed Rail Authority Board of Directors announced the appointment of Brian P. Kelly as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) due to take effect on Feb. 1.

Brian has ably led the California State Transportation Agency since its inception and is uniquely qualified to move the nation’s first high-speed rail project forward,” said Governor Jerry Brown.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority published their annual sustainability report in December which covered their 2016 performance.

In the report, the California High-Speed Rail Authority said they have advanced construction in the Central Valley. The Authority reported that 99 percent of all construction materials were able to be recycled. This included 100 percent of all concrete and steel being recycled.

“High-speed rail will be the backbone of an integrated, modern, statewide rail network which we are advancing together with our state, regional and local partners,” said Interim CEO Tom Fellenz.

As of December 31, the California High-Speed Rail Authority reports partnerships with 427 small businesses to build the rail system. Of these 427 businesses, 414 of them are located in California and 136 of them are located in Southern California.

  1. This high speed rail is such a scam to make politicians and their cronies rich. We could have built four Gerald Ford aircraft carriers with the money and still have billions left over.

  2. Is it good to have a railroad bypass the town? Only the future knows

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
