California is set to become the first state to regulate the distribution of plastic straws in restaurants, due to a bill that is now heading to the desk of Gov. Brown.

AB 1884 — passed by the Assembly with a 45-20 vote — would prohibit full-service, dine-in restaurants from offering “single-use” plastic straws to customers unless they are requested.

The first and second violations of the bill will result in a warning and notice of violation. Any subsequent infractions are punishable by a fine of “$25 per day” for each day the restaurant is found violating the law.

The amount should not exceed $300 per year, according to the bill.

AB 1884 has been lauded by lawmaker supporters and environmentalists as a step toward the “eventual elimination of single-use plastic straws that are harmful to the planet.”

Opponents of AB 1884 have labeled the bill as an over-step by the state legislator, as well as an unnecessary mitigation to the growth of small businesses.

“California businesses already have too much regulation,” Assemblyman Matthew Harper, R-Huntington Beach said. “Going after litterers is the way to address the problem, not going after the restaurants. … You hardly get anybody who gets cited for litter. That’s something that should be stepped up.”

Following this concurrence vote in the Assembly, the vote now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.

  1. What no more p. ing in the river.

  2. This state is run by lunatics. Its all about controlling our every move and this isn’t the end of it. People are leaving this twilight zone in droves.

  3. Agreed. This is another step in government control of our lives. Enough is enough!

  4. I’d like a straw with my coffee please and another with my water. And please bring two with my Arnold Palmer so I can share.

  5. I never use a straw and they still bring them with every glass even refills. It would be much easier if them had them on table if you need one take ut

  6. First it was your single use plastic bags.
    OOOOH NO!

    Now it’s your plastic straws.
AAAAAAHG! How will I now suck?! (Let me count the ways).

    What’s next?
    Your plastic car?
    NOOOOOOOO!!!

    Your 3-D printed plastic guns?
NO! Not that! It says so in the 2nd amendment. (No).

    Your plastic Jesus?
    OK, take it. Please.

Maybe we should all realize pollution from non-biodegradable plastic products is a
serious environmental concern and be responsible citizens of this planet. (Yes).

    • There is this thing called recycling and picking up trash. We should have more access to recycling and cleaning up after ourselves instead of just banning products, that’s the easy way out that takes away freedoms. Idiotic liberalism. So sick of it.

  7. Our idiot “leaders” are so concerned about plastic straws polluting the environment that they pass laws against it while at the same time allowing people in Frisco to drop them and poop right on the street. Is this responsible leadership? They have already screwed us on their gas tax and vehicle registration costs for “flush it down ” Brown’s idiot train to nowhere. What’s next?

  8. I travel a lot and when people ask me where I’m from and tell them California they either start laughing or make some comment of how crazy we are. I have to tell them we are not all crazy, there are still a lot of normal and nice people here. We are the laughing stock of the world. I wish voters would wake up.

  9. Complete joke the things the politicians focus on instead of dealing with real issues. This is a feel good issue for those who are dominated by their feelings. Never mind all the garbage all over the place in Los Angeles that we are not controlling, but we sure can control straws! Now people will be “illegally” purchasing straws from places outside of California. What a complete joke of “leaders” we have in California.
