At the federal level, Santa Clarita voters will decide on candidates for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Democrat Dianne Feinstein and who will run in the November midterm election for the CA-25 House of Representatives seat, currently held by Republican Steve Knight.

The Congressional primary season has been a contentious period for candidates and their supporters. The frontrunners competing in the California “top-two” primary election are Knight, who did not face a challenge from his party, and Democratic challengers Bryan Caforio, Katie Hill and Jess Phoenix.

A top-two primary is a type of primary election in which all candidates are listed on the same primary ballot. The two candidates who get the most votes, regardless of their party affiliation, advance to the general election.

Knight, who has held the seat since 2015, is expected to advance to the November ballot with ease. The three Democratic candidates face a battle to distinguish themselves from the competition.

None of the candidates are expected to match up with Knight in percentage of the primary vote, but analysts believe that Santa Clarita Democrats rallying behind whichever candidate wins tomorrow will give the party a strong chance to flip the district in November.

At the state level, residents will go to the polls to decide on the primary candidates for state governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, controller, treasurer, attorney general insurance commissioner, state board of equalization and superintendent of public instruction.

In the California State Assembly, the 38th district, which encompasses Santa Clarita, is up for grabs. Freshman incumbent Dante Acosta, a Republican, only faces one challenger: Democrat Christy Smith.

Because only two candidates are competing, both will automatically advance to the November ballot. But the June primary is expected to be an early indicator of how that election is expected to play out.

Los Angeles County will hold primary elections for the county board of supervisors, county assessor, county sheriff, community college district governing board and superior court judges on June 5. If no candidate receives a majority of votes in the primary election for a specific seat, the top two candidates will advance to a general election on November 6.

And lastly, voters will decide on five state measures that range from bond funding to transportation to property tax systems. For more information about these measures, College of the Canyons Political Science Professor Dr. Phil Gussin created a number of informative videos for each ballot measure that can be watched below:

  • Proposition 68 (Video) — Authorizes bonds funding parks, natural resources protection, climate adaptation, water quality and supply and flood protection.
  • Proposition 69 (Video) — Requires that certain new transportation revenues be used for transportation services. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.
  • Proposition 70 (Video) — Requires Legislative supermajority vote approving use of cap-and-trade reserve fund. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.
  • Proposition 71 (Video) — Sets effective date for ballot measures, legislative constitutional amendment. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.
  • Proposition 72 (Video) — Permits Legislature to exclude newly constructed rain-capture systems from property-tax reassessment requirement. Legislative Constitutional Amendment.

Editor’s Note: Proposition 71 and 72 are both explained in the same video.
