Secretary of Defense James Mattis reported that the DOD is looking into the concept of a joint office for artificial intelligence, or AI, research.
“We would concentrate all of DOD’s efforts since we have a number of AI efforts underway right now,” said Mattis in front of the U.S. House Armed Services Committee. “We’re looking at pulling them all together.”
Congressman Steve Knight, R-Santa Clarita, was in attendance during the meeting, and later expressed his support for the office.
“For over half a century, the United States has enjoyed sole ownership of the most advanced military and defense technologies in the world. This has led to commensurate advancements in the civilian tech sector and provided us with diplomatic and economic leverage to protect our interests around the globe,” said Knight. “However, in recent years, competitors like China and Russia have been aggressively trying to close this gap by conducting their own research or stealing ours. Intentional investments across the services for capabilities like AI, hypersonics, and other cutting-edge programs is critical, and will help focus the Department’s efforts to maintain our advantage over other nations “
AI is one of a host of technology areas that needs more investment to ensure the U.S. military keeps its edge, according to the Pentagon’s new national defense strategy,
Currently, AI falls under the jurisdiction of the Pentagon’s research chief, Michael Griffin, who has been an outspoken proponent of AI.
Last year, the DOD launched Project Maven, which aims to use AI to speed up the processing of vast amounts of video collected by unmanned aircraft, according to officials.
