Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents Santa Clarita as part of the Fifth District, motioned to nominate Acosta during the Dec. 11 Board of Supervisors meeting.

“I am very passionate about the issue and want to ensure the quality and consistency of water is upheld in the valley,” said Acosta.

The former legislator also cited his time serving as vice chair on the Assembly Natural Resources committee as further experience for the new role on the board, which Barger mentioned.

“Mr. Acosta is very knowledgeable and has many years of extensive experience in the water supply field,” said Barger in the motion.

The SCV Water board is set to vote on the nomination on Dec. 18, according to Board President Bill Cooper.

Acosta is up for the seat currently held by Dean Efstathiou, nominated by former Supervisor Michael Antonovich, who served 24 years on the Castaic Lake Water Agency Board.

SCV Water was created after a bill authored by Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, dissolved several water districts and agencies into one body.

Senate Bill 634 reorganized the Castaic Lake Water Agency (CLWA) and the Newhall County Water District (NCWD) into the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency to provide, sell, manage and deliver water at retail or wholesale within the agency’s territory.

The SCV Water service area has a population of 273,000 and covers approximately 195 square miles, or 124,000 acres.

“I will continue to advocate for the residents of this valley,” Acosta said. “As the community grows, water will be a more crucial issue.”

If approved by the Board of Directors, Acosta would take office on Jan. 2, 2019.

  1. This is wrong. It is some kind of political payback. What? Does he need health insurance or something? Dnate has never been interested in water. He has no experience as the former appointee did ANd he has no relationship to District 35. This is totally poliitical and a black spot on Barger’s record.

He was just voted out of office by people in the SCV for heavens sake!

  2. Hopefully he puts some water regulators on the homes in SCV there is no need for that much water pressure coming out of your faucet. Help save water people not just charge them for this free natural resource.

  3. It seems nobody ‘wante’ Dante…Adios Dante!
