Two days after former President Barack Obama made a speech in Orange County endorsing Hill, Newsom — who is now the leading contender to replace retiring Gov. Jerry Brown — voiced his support for both Hill and State Assembly candidate Christy Smith.

Newsom spoke on a number of issues during his speech, including environmental issues, immigration and gun control, but also took time to highlight Hill’s background working with the homeless populations of Southern California.

“You’ve got a candidate for Congress that has committed herself as an example to ending one of the most challenging issues that we face, not just in California but as a society … and that’s homelessness,” said Newsom.

The event is a part of Newsom traveling the state this week aboard the “Blue California” bus, campaigning with six Democratic challengers in top “red to blue” U.S. House districts who are on the front-lines of the fight to win back the House and 15 legislative candidates in close state Assembly and Senate races, according to officials.

Hill said during the event that her and Smith coming together for a joint meeting with Newsom was, in part, to encourage residents to get to the polls.

“As Democrats, we have the values, we’ve got the majority of people who already want the same things that we want. Whether it’s affordable health care, or affordable housing or making sure that our kids get the right education and every opportunity to exceed in life,” said Hill. “But that only happens if we show up and vote. If we vote, we win, and we’re going to win this November.”

Although Newsom was visiting Hill’s campaign office, the lieutenant governor also emphasized that Smith — who is the current governing board member in the Newhall School District — has a background working in schools and is a person that understands the “nuance” and “importance” of education.

“You can’t have a conversation about economic development unless you’re having that conversation around education,” said Newsom. “Education is economic development.”

Smith said that her campaign would focus on a variety of issues in local communities, including a clean energy economy, safe neighborhoods and fully funded public schools, adding that facing these problems are “what bring us all together.”

“This movement in California right now is about more than partisanship,” said Smith. “It’s about unity, and its about standing for what California’s values and where we’re going moving forward.”

  1. WARNING:
A vote for ANY of these Democratic candidates means you support real family values like education and health care, but not those who would deny you them in favor of corporations and the wealthy. How dare those Dems favor the people! They must be Commies!!!

  2. Go away Denny. You’re annoying…

  3. WARNING:
None of these candidates, especially Gavin, REALLY care about what you care about. They are just playing to the masses that will get them votes.

We ALL (non-politicians) care about health care and family values. Under Obama, my health care costs when from $600/month to $1800/month for LESS coverage. Please tell me again how the Dems care about health care?

All they care about is votes (sure that’s what most politicians care about, and pander to to gain them). This is why I liked Trump. Sure, he’s a misogynistic arrogant billionaire, but at least he’s a business man that knows how to cut the BS and get things done. You Dems will NEVER see it this way, ALL you care about is that he “grabbed a P” 10 years ago, or had an affair. Of course I don’t support those things, but WHERE WERE YOU WHEN BILL CLINTON did these things, IN THE WHITE HOUSE? You hypocrites.

    • It’s your ignorance that’s making you so crazy angry.
Health Care… how about single payer and cutting out the brokers that say if we will or won’t be covered. Your medical well-being should not be decided by third parties whose goal is to insure their shareholders a profit.
Your words are not my thoughts nor beliefs. Do not include me in your twisted assessment. But, I do agree with you when you said, “You Dems will never see it this way.” Clinton was a jerk, but TRUMP is YOUR jerk and you must own that for the rest of your life.

      • Denny, I agree with SCV guy above. My health care costs sckrocketed from 127 a month to 754 a month under Obamacare, and I’ve never had a democrat admit that “that’s not what Obamacare was supposed to do” or admit that Obamacare has raised costs and not lowered them the $2500 a year Obama promised. So before you get snarky and arrogant and cruel and mean (all very NON-Liberal qualities) you should try and engage in persuasion based upon mutually understood facts which might require asking questions and listening. So yes, I “support real family values like education and health care” as you say you do, but because of this support I EMPHATICALLY resist the candidacy of Gavin Newsom, Katie Hill, and Christy Smith, who choose to nationalize, socialize, or communize all of these things which will ultimately only hurt all of us. Try being kind.

        • Republicans fought against the Affordable Care Act tooth and nail until the most beneficial parts were cut out. What passed was a watered-down weaker version, but got lots of people covered that were previously not.
          Did you know that?

Republicans then voted over 50 times to repeal it rather than making it better.
          Did you know that?

By telling you this information, I am being kind.
          Did you know that?

And STILL- Nobody has disputed my three facts regarding Steve Knight’s positions that will adversely affect us all. Nor has anyone admitted, Yes- THAT’S what we want!

          Kindly, Denny NNWofLA

          • Pelosi: “We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.” Ok, so if Republicans would have just passed it like the Dems wanted THEN my rates would have _not_ gone up? Oh boy, those big bad Reps screwed me. Come on, you’re delusional. It’s pretty much common sense that if you start giving everyone free healthcare, the rates of those paying are going to go up.

BTW, why not make it better from the get go? I’ve spent the majority of my career in Healthcare, and while I don’t claim to be an expert on the AFA, I have seen first hand the problems that exist within the industry.

Also, there were a couple things I liked about AFA, but not so much that I wanted to pay 3 times my premium.

Denny, did you notice now, that I was honest about a few things in your favor? I said Trump was a misogynistic arrogant billionaire, and that I liked a couple things about AFA. In my experience with Dems like you, is that you will gladly take all those concessions in your favor, BUT you will _never_ admit to anything good a Republican has done. Trump could find the cure to cancer, and you guys would find something negative to say about it. You just can’t admit the good things he’s done.

            I must remember Proverbs 26:4-14

      • Denny, I’m not “crazy angry”, I used ALL CAPS for emphasis not yelling. I am at peace, but will concede that I’m frustrated by the hypocrisy of some Dems.

So are you telling me that Single Payer Health Care will make my rates go back down to $600/mo? If so, I’m for it, but it won’t. My rates went up because we’re giving FREE healthcare to masses of people and I’m paying for it (as are you). I’m all for helping the needy, but $600 to $1800 per month, come on now.

So at least you are honest that “Clinton was a jerk”, but be honest about this, the attacks on Trump are nothing like any President has ever had to deal with.

I have no problem agreeing to disagree with you. I have many Dem friends, and we just think differently on this, but we are still friends.

        • Perhaps if you knew the Health Insurance companies wrote the laws and passed them on to their bought and paid for Republicans in congress to sponsor these bills, you’d understand why it’s this way. But you won’t look it up. I don’t want you to believe me. If you are sincere, do the research for your own knowledge.

But I go back to the three things Steve Knight has failed us on.
Gun reform. Voted NO every time.
Voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
Says Social Security is a bad idea.

Many have piled on my comments with tired talking points, generalizations, exaggerations and indignation. None has repudiated my specific claims about Steve Knight. You can’t, so, they must be just what you want?

  4. Dems have been driving the middle class out of CA and dividing the nation on race. They stand for the illegal immigrant, and let the vets rot to death. Newsom wants to provide FREE health care and college to illegal immigrants and pass on the expense to legal citizens. He thinks our taxes are not high enough! He wants to undo prop 13 to raise property taxes. He wants to allow illegal immigrants to sit on boards that can tell citizens what to do. Newsom will continue the downward spiral that Brown has set in motion. NOT ONE PENNY TO AN ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT UNTIL EVERY VET IS TAKEN CARE. NOT ONE PENNY UNTIL EVERY US BORN CHILD IS OFF THE STREETS AND FED. Socialist Newson does not care about anything but your vote. The dems are trying desperately to keep us fed off the hand of the govt but we are waking up, so the only logical solution is to promise non-citizens more freebies at the expense of the already heavy burdened CA tax payer.

  5. All I can say is look art the picture at the top of the article with the former Mayor that should be in jail and see who he is supporting. Vote for ANYONE OTHER THAN A CANDIDATE HE SUPPORTS! Very simple!

  6. I’m going back to the real world and wake up from this fantastic dream.

  7. Looks like the Democrats are at it again, spreading all sorts of horse manure so they can tip the scales. Obama had 8 years to fix things. He fixed them all right, but in the wrong direction. Now he comes around and pats himself on the back for all the work Trump did. And now little Obama, in the form of Newsome comes around wanting to top Jerry (flush it down) Brown with more fees and taxes and hair brained ideas on how to waste the rest of Tax money Brown hasn’t yet blown on his train to nowhere, built (and bilked) by Feinstein’s husband’s company.Don’t you just love the way democrats spend Your money with no accounting for it?

  8. a vote for republicans is voting for that thing in the OVAL OFFICE and the rest of the swampers

    • Maryjane Like Removing human trafficking, closing board to keep drugs and criminals out. supporting rule of law, protecting of my 2nd amendment and 1st amendment rights. Supporting military and all our law enforcement. Cleaning out all of the corruption in or DOJ and FBI and Congress and CIA. A GREAT WAGES AND ECONOMY. Roll back regulations.Hell yes give me more what this oval Office and administration has to offer.

  9. The one percent are killing the middle-class WAKE UP. And it is the republican that has been making the middle class disappear starting with good old R.R

  10. SCV Guy- Please name ten good things Republicans have done for our mutual benefit. Five? Any?
