Gov. Jerry Brown Signed A Host Of New Laws Into Effect Saturday

In addition to the “hot dog bill,” Brown signed dozens of pieces of new legislation into law over the weekend.

The governor signed laws that helped protect stray animals, help schools deal with the opiate epidemic, increases public and private schools health programs, and more. Below are a few highlight as well as a full list of bills that where signed in or vetoed.

AB 2269 by Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R-Escondido: – Animal shelters: research animals: prohibitions: A bill was signed in that prevents the transfer of animals from any pound or shelter to an “animal dealer” or research facility for the purposes of testing or research. This is the first time that the state of California has enacted a law to combat the practice of “pound seizure” and keep animals that end up in shelters and pounds free of being sold or traded into testing and experiments.

 

AB 1719 by Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez, D-Pomona: Beginning in the 2018-2019 school year, the state of California will require all schools to include CPR training in their health programs.

 

AB 2172 by Assemblymember Brian W. Jones, R-Santee: A new law is going to allow beer and wine enthusiasts the ability to bring their own home brews to club meetings and competitions that are considered to be legitimate by the state.

 

AB 1748 by Assemblymember Chad J. Mayes, R-Yucca Valley: the heroin and opiate epidemic is seemingly only getting worse as time goes on and a new law signed in on Saturday aims to help prevent overdose deaths. The bill will provide school medical offices with the opioid antagonist Naloxone (NARCAN) and allow for trained nurses to administer the drug if needed on campus.

  • AB 691 by Assemblymember Ian C. Calderon (D-Whittier) – Revised Uniform Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act.
  • AB 723 by Assemblymember David S. Chiu (D-San Francisco) – Housing: finance.
  • AB 736 by Assemblymember Ken Cooley (D-Rancho Cordova) – State teachers’ retirement: executive positions.
  • AB 797 by Assemblymember Marc Steinorth (R-Rancho Cucamonga) – Motor vehicles: rescue or provision of care for animal: civil and criminal liability.
  • AB 1687 by Assemblymember Ian C. Calderon (D-Whittier) – Customer records: age information: commercial online entertainment employment service providers.
