H.R. 2898, the Western Water and American Food Security Act of 2015 was introduced by Rep. David Valadao, CA-21, in late June.

Representative Knight is an original co-sponsor of the legislation, which he says would set up a process for increased pumping, capture, and storage of water.

“A state without water is dead,” said Representative Knight in his speech on the House floor. “That is where we are headed if we do not pass this bill.”

Knight has been calling for federal drought relief legislation for months now, stating in previous interviews that it is California’s highest priority and that constituents have consistently asked for help with water issues.

Since late May, water rates in Southern California have risen as much as forty percent, while families and businesses have been asked to reduce consumption by more than thirty percent.

“People are suffering, and people can’t comply with those reductions, that’s our life.” continued Knight. “If we don’t do something about this today, when will we?”

H.R. 2898 passed the House on Thursday on a 245-176 vote. It now awaits assignment in the Senate.

Representative Steve Knight, R-Antelope Valley, represents California’s 25th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives, which includes the communities throughout the Antelope, Santa Clarita and Simi Valleys.
