The protest outside the University Center was regarding the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), while inside the topics included career technical education and prioritizing community college.

Inside, local leaders from COC, the William S. Hart District, Saugus Union School District and Newhall School District heard from the Santa Clarita Valley’s elected officials. The chancellor thanked the legislators for their efforts in supporting and strengthening local schools.

“Our focus in planning this event was to have education officials and legislators informally discuss their priorities for the year,” said Santa Clarita Community College District Chancellor Dr. Dianne Van Hook. “We also just wanted to express our gratitude to our elected officials.”

The event was attended by Congressman Steve Knight, R-Santa Clarita; Senator Scott Wilk R-Antelope Valley; Assemblymen Dante Acosta, R-Santa Clarita; and Tom Lackey, R-Palmdale. Senator Henry Stern, D-Agoura Hills, was unable to attend due to a conflicting committee vote in Sacramento regarding a bill about Aliso Canyon, according to a spokeswoman for Stern.

“I’m sure all districts represented here tonight can point to many instances where local elected officials have rallied and listened to you,” said Dr. Van Hook. “We have always found doors open and minds open in Sacramento and Washington.”

After meeting with education officials for about two hours, Knight discussed everything from the ACA and Trump’s travel ban to global warming with a small group of protesters outside the building for about an hour.

“We need to repair what’s broken about the ACA,” Knight told the group of about eight demonstrators who stayed for the entire meeting. “There is not enough competition, too many people are seeing rising healthcare costs.”

The protest was coordinated by many local democratic organizations, including: Our Revolution SCV, the Democratic Alliance for Action (DAA), SCV Young Democrats, and SCV United for Progress (SCVUP).

“We’re here to make sure they see us and to make sure our voices are heard,” said Logan Smith, one of the organizers of the event. “We are not done — there are more things being planned.”

Congressman Knight said he would be hosting an in-person town hall meeting March 4. The location is still to be determined.

Knight also reiterated he’s available by text at his cell phone number, 661-450-7422.

  1. The leftoid said, “We are not done — there are more things being planned.” so you really weren’t there to talk to them. Just to protest I see. Uhhuh

  2. Why is there an unrelated night photo at the top of the page? What is that? It doesn’t look anything like 150 protestors, nor does it seem to be an interior shot of COC leaders. So what is it? Why is it on this story? Why not put the shot of the protestors at the top, since that’s what the story is about?
