A Santa Clarita resident spoke to the city council during the Aug. 28 meeting, asking the body to formally recognize of the German-American people, according to City Hall documents.

Councilmember Bill Mirada motioned to add the action to a future meeting, with a consent of the other members of the city council.

“We are very proud to do this,” said Mayor Laurene Weste. “This proclamation is to honor all of the contributions Germans have brought to society.”

During the previous meeting on Sept. 25, the council members also took time to recognize Sept. 15 – Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month.

The council welcomed members of the College of the Canyons German language program, including Professor Heidi Esslinger and four students, as well as Steve Petzold, who encouraged the city council to make the proclamation.

While there is no existing national month of recognition for the German-American people, Congress voted to create “German-American Day” on Oct. 6 of every year in 1987.

The holiday honors “the tricentennial of the arrival of the first German immigrants to the United States,” according to the federal statute.

During the Tuesday meeting, the city council also voted to recognize Oct. 13 as “Rubber Ducky Festival Day” to recognize the Family Health Centers (SDFHC) event to raise money for their patient care services.

During the festival, participants adopt a rubber duck for $5, and then race the ducks down a waterway in order to determine prize-winners.

The council honored the annual event which has raised tens-of-thousands of dollars for community medical, dental and mental health.

This year’s Rubber Ducky Festival is set for Saturday, Oct. 13 at Bridgeport Park.

  1. Wow this might be the first Caucasian heritage recognition. Awesome job Santa Clarita.

  2. So much brought to us by German culuture. Hegel, Thomas Mann, Herman Hesse, Erich Maria Remarque, Brecht, Schiller, Goethe, Durer, Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Buxtehude, and WWI, WWII, concentration camps and Hitler. Whatever the US thinks of its European allies at the moment, Germany will continue to develop into a stable democratic nation.

  3. I am of German-American heritage. I was born in this country and so were my ancestors way back. Never considered myself German-American, only American. I sure don’t need a month for my heritage.
