In coordination with the Los Angeles County’s Homeless Initiative Plan, councilmembers are scheduled to receive a presentation this week on the proposals to address homelessness in Santa Clarita.

Recently, the Ad-Hoc Committee on Homeless Issues, consisting of Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean and Councilmember Cameron Smyth, met in July to review the draft plan and directed staff to make it available for public review and comment.

The community was able to give their input throughout the month of August, and the City also received comments from Bridge to Home and Homes 4 Families, two nonprofits that work with local individuals that are home-insecure.

“Comments were related to existing services such as drug prevention, affordable housing and increasing income currently offered to residents experiencing homelessness that were not included in the draft plan,” said officials within the City’s agenda.

In October of last year, Santa Clarita was awarded a planning grant from the county for $50,000 to hire a consultant, Analytic Insight, to develop the community plan.

“This funding (supported) the City in engaging a diverse group of internal departments and external community partners to create a local homelessness plan that coordinates with current community and county systems and strategies to end homelessness,” said Carrie Lujan, a City spokesperson.

Analytic Insight created the plan by conducting two strategic planning sessions with community leaders and stakeholders, and more than 30 interviews with service providers and community stakeholders to identify gaps or duplications in local homelessness services.

After nearly three months of research and interviews, Analytic Insight completed the draft community plan to address homelessness in Santa Clarita.

The plan includes a detailed gap and network analysis, 15 goals and 21 specific action items recommended to have a significant impact on homelessness in Santa Clarita. Each action item identifies key stakeholders and detailed timelines to assist the proposed taskforce with implementation.

“We can end homelessness if we all say yes to housing – and this innovative program proves that the solutions can start in the areas that we know best,” said Elise Buik, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Los Angeles. “We’re collectively fighting for all of our homeless neighbors, and these cities are at the frontlines providing hope for a better future for all in L.A. County.”

The Santa Clarita City Council reconvenes at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the City Council Chambers on the first floor of City Hall at 23920 Valencia Boulevard.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
