There are 11 candidates who’ve filed to be on the ballot for Santa Clarita City Council in the city’s first November general election.

Both incumbents are seeking re-election, which means according to city law, the filing period closed Friday for candidates to express their intent to run.
The incumbents are TimBen Boydston, executive director for the Canyon Theatre Guild, and Bob Kellar, the current mayor, who’s also a realtor with Kellar-Davis.
The challengers include: Moazzem Chowdhury, a pharmacist who came in ninth out of 13 candidates; Kenneth Dean, a teacher who also runs Dean Interior Design; Alan Ferdman, a retired engineer and president of the Canyon Country Advisory Committee, who came in fourth to Dante Acosta in 2014 by 104 votes; Brett Haddock, a software engineer; Matthew Hargett, an emergency medical technician; Sandra Nichols, a retiree David Ruelas, who did not have an occupation listed on the city’s candidates list; Cameron Smyth, a former Santa Clarita City Councilman and state assemblyman; Mark White, of GEM Mortgage of Valencia; and Paul Wieczorek, a U.S. Post Office employee who came in 11th out of 13 in 2014.
Filing, election information for the Santa Clarita City Council race
Prospective City Council candidates needed the signatures of 20 to 30 registered City voters prior to filing nomination paperwork.
Each candidate is required to file a Statement of Economic Interests disclosing investments and interests in real property at the time the nomination paper is returned for filing. There is no charge for filing nomination papers.

For a fee, candidates may also prepare a statement to be included in the sample ballot materials and mailed to voters. Statements may include the candidate’s name, occupation, and brief description of no more than 200 words stating their education and qualifications. The estimated fees are $1,700 for printing the candidate statement in English only and $3,400 for English and Spanish translations and is payable when nomination papers are filed.
The two top vote-getters are expected to be sworn into office on December 13, 2016 just prior to the regularly scheduled City Council meeting.
Nomination papers and candidate handbooks will be available beginning July 18, 2016, in the City Clerk’s Office, at City Hall, Suite 120, located at 23920 Valencia Blvd. Election office hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, except during holidays.
Any city resident wishing to lend their signature to a potential candidate’s nomination paperwork must be a registered voter 18 years of age or older at the time nomination papers are issued, reside in the city of Santa Clarita, and be a citizen of the United States. Each eligible voter may nominate up to two prospective candidates.
Upcoming dates for the 2016 Santa Clarita City Council election:
July 18 – August 12, 2016 – Filing period for Nomination Papers and Candidate’s Statements. All candidates for City Council will file these documents with the Santa Clarita City Clerk.
August 1, 2016 – Semi-Annual Campaign Disclosure Statement (Form 460) due to Santa Clarita City Clerk no later than 5:30 pm.
August 13 – August 17, 2016 – Extension of filling period should one or more incumbents fail to file their nomination papers by 5:00 pm on August 12, 2016. During this five-day extended filing period any registered voter who resides in the City, with the exception of the incumbent election official(s), may file nomination papers up with the Santa Clarita City Clerk until the close of business on August 17, 2016 at 5:30 pm.
August 17, 2016 – Deadline for candidates to provide the Santa Clarita City Clerk with all candidate ballot designations and candidate statements for approval and transmittal to the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder.
August 18, 2016 – The Secretary of State will determine the order of names as they will appear on the ballot.
November 8, 2016 – Election Day.
