The upcoming Santa Clarita City Council race is expected to have the highest turnout for voters of any previous race, due to the fact that it will line up with the November general election for the first time.

We’re already seeing what’s likely to be record-breaking fundraising efforts from some of the candidates, as the anticipated need for a campaign war chest is also expected to be the highest ever.

But here at KHTS AM-1220, we wanted to give everyone at least an introduction to the candidates, in case you can’t make it to the forums, meet and greets, debates or discussions.

We contacted all 11 Santa Clarita City Council candidates, and offered them two minutes to answer the following questions:

What do you love about Santa Clarita?

What three things would you change about Santa Clarita?

How would you describe Santa Clarita to an outsider?

What is the most important job of a City Council member?

Why are you the right choice for City Council?

The challengers include: Kenneth Dean, a teacher who also runs Dean Interior Design; Alan Ferdman, a retired engineer and president of the Canyon Country Advisory Committee, who came in fourth to Dante Acosta in 2014 by 104 votes; Brett Haddock, an eBay software engineer; Matthew Hargett, an emergency medical technician; Sandra Nichols, a retiree David Ruelas, who did not have an occupation listed on the city’s candidates list; Cameron Smyth, a former Santa Clarita City Councilman and state assemblyman; Mark White, of GEM Mortgage of Valencia; and Paul Wieczorek, a U.S. Post Office employee who came in 11th out of 13 in 2014.

  1. The City of Santa Clarita deserves and needs some fresh faces on the City Council. The tired old career politicians need to step down for the good of the citizens.
