The forum will be open to the public and anyone can attend, but it will focus exclusively on issues relevant to the Santa Clarita Valley senior community, said Rachelle Dardeau, executive director for the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center. The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center is hosting a free candidate forum Tuesday, March 3 from 2-3:30 p.m., according to Senior Center officials. The forum will be moderated by Perry Smith, news director for KHTS AM-1220.

The event was requested by those who regularly visit the center, Dardeau said.

“It’s something that we typically do around election time,” she said, adding that there’s been an especially high level of interest this time around because there are so many candidates.

“They know that the collaboration between the Santa Clarita Valley Committee on Aging (which oversees Senior Center operations) and the city is a very important collaboration to the health and success of the senior center,” she said. “So seniors have a lot of questions about that collaboration, and what the candidates think (city officials) should or shouldn’t be doing as far as collaborating with the Senior Center.”

Seniors or those with questions about issues affecting seniors are encouraged to bring their questions to the forum, Dardeau said.

As residents register for the event, which is free, they will receive a card to write down their question. Senior Center officials are collecting the cards, which will be given to the moderator.

If someone would like to show up early to submit additional questions, that’s also encouraged, Dardeau said.

Candidates will be given an opportunity to make an opening statement, there will then be questions fielded from the audience and then candidates will be given an opportunity to make closing statements.

Our seniors tend to really get involved in these types of activities that we have,” Dardeau said. “They’re a large voting block, they’re active in their community and they want to know that their needs are going to be addressed.”

For those interested in attending the Senior Center forum, it’s located at 22900 Market Street, near Newhall Avenue.
