Santa Clarita Friends Launch TrumpSingles.com Dating Site

Dave Goss, 35, of Santa Clarita, was on his couch watching primary returns May 3, when he realized a political revolution was under way.

At least, that’s what he and his buddy are banking on.

Their plan: make dating great again.

“It’s a calm government overthrow, with how many people are supporting the radical nominees,” Goss said. “(Donald) Trump is playing off of that very well.”

Which explains why Goss is one of two partners in a new national dating site called TrumpSingles.com, capitalizing on the particularly polarizing nature of this year’s presidential race — as well as cheeky play on the free BernieSingles.com — with a notably Trump-esque twist.

“It’s actually a great idea to have a dating site for a political affiliation,” Goss said. “We’re  a Trump-related website — we’re not Bernie; we’re not giving stuff out for free.”

A lot of people put hard work on the Bernie site to hook people up for free, he said. “We’re taking it to a Trump-ian level.”

The site does have a free option that admins keep “a fairly tight rein on,” Goss said, but added that unfettered access to the site is $5 a month.

The site started as the two buddies, Tim Burks, who runs an IT company, and Dave were playing darts at Doc’s Inn in Newhall. Burks handles the programming and site management, and Goss is working on logistics and marketing.

While the site began as a joke, with Dave registering the domain as soon as he heard about the Sanders site launch in February, it slowly came off the backburner as Trump’s candidacy gained momentum.

When Ted Cruz dropped out after that fateful Tuesday in Indiana, Goss knew they had something, at least until November.

The site’s appeal stems from a confluence of interesting political factors, Goss said: Many are interested in supporting Trump, but afraid to be associated with him publicly due to the frequent nature of his inflammatory statements. However, they’re still voting for him, he added.

The controversial nature of the run has prompted some to let Goss know that while they support the site and the idea, he said, they’re hesitant to directly link themselves to the presumptive Republican nominee.

However, the site is quickly gaining steam, with MarketWatch, Blaze and, on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal all profiling the business. Goss said the plan is to have mobile apps for Android and iPhone up by the end of this week, but the website itself has been up since last week.

And, despite its name, the actual site content is not political in nature, it’s really about putting together people with common ideological ground. Goss described the state of discourse as disarray and thinks the site can help people avoid some of the terrible dating mishaps he’s heard in this political climate.

A friend who supported Hillary Clinton was on a blind date with a woman who supported Trump, and once the discussion turned to the presidential nominee: “He stared blankly at her, stood up and walked out and left her with the bill,” Goss said. “(Political discussion) turns into name-calling and verbal abuse of each other, and that’s not constructive at all,” he said.

Goss, who also works in production for “Face Off,” on the SyFy channel, said they plan to keep the momentum, at least through the election.

“If he didn’t get the nod, I don’t think that we’ll be able to continue this,” Goss said. But after he received the alerts about Cruz’ dropout decision on his phone: “We both realized we have to jump on this now.”
