Local lawmakers sounded off, saying Governor Brown “glossed over” many important topics in his yearly address to the people of California.

“While it faces its share of difficulties, we should never forget the bounty and endless opportunities bestowed upon this special place,” Brown said.

The Governor discussed the environment and the economy the longest-serving leader of California’s final state of the state address.

“Today Governor Brown’s State of the State glossed over issues impacting life for every day Californians; ironically many of the hardships our citizens face are a direct result of policies created under his leadership, said Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita.

Wilk cited issues of the recently passed Proposition 47 and 57, a pair of laws approved by California voters in 2014, which reduced the classification of most “nonserious and nonviolent property and drug crimes” from a felony to a misdemeanor, according to the text of the law.

“Since passage of his get out of jail free policies, violent crime and property crime have skyrocketed while police are forced to play ‘catch-and-release’ with criminals who would previously have been behind bars.”

The Governor, in turn wanted lawmakers to the “overall system” of law enforcement in the state.

“My plea is relatively straightforward: take time to understand how our system of crime and punishment has evolved, how other states and countries have devised their prison systems and what changes might we now make,” Brown said.

Assemblyman Dante Acosta shared some of the same views, adding that the Governor did not discuss issues such as housing affordability.

“Today’s State of the State speech was far more about who wasn’t mentioned than who was. Not mentioned were those who make up the highest in the nation poverty rate,” said Acosta. “Also not mentioned were the millions struggling to afford the historically high cost of housing. Similarly ignored were my constituents paying some of the highest fuel costs in the nation for the right to spend much of their life in traffic.”

  1. Does anybody realize that Brown is mentally unbalanced? He is a lunatic. My friend’s husband had to work with him years ago and he said Brown is not all there. He couldn’t even finish a sentence. This is what’s running California. We are in deep trouble in this state.
