Popular Drive-Through Flu Shot Program Back For Another Round

Last year’s event immunized over 1,000 people.

[view:node_ad=5]The City of Santa Clarita,
in partnership with the L.A. Department of Public Health, College of the
Canyons and the L.A. County Sheriff and Fire Departments, will host the third
annual drive-thru flu shot clinic on Friday, November 7 at the College of the
Canyons. Flu shots will be given out to all members of the public, free of
charge from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Those interested in receiving a flu
shot need only to simply drive-up to the flu shot line at the College of the Canyons
Valencia Boulevard parking lot between the hours
of the clinic.

As part of the collaborative clinic, students from College
of the Canyon’s School of Nursing
will be administering the flu shots, along with public health nurses. City
staff and emergency volunteers will also be supporting the clinic operations.

“Flu shots are provided to the public in anticipation of an
active flu season, but the November 7th event also serves a secondary purpose,”
said Donna Nuzzi, City Emergency Services Supervisor. “This clinic will also
test the Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI) response during a bioterrorism
attack which treats an impacted, mass population with medications within a
short time period.”

Under the CRI plan, the drive thru clinic is called a rapid
point of dispensing or POD. College of the Canyons is one of many a designated
POD sites located throughout Santa Clarita.

According to public health officials, the City’s 2006 and
2007 flu clinics were two of the best in all of California.
In a three-hour period, more than a thousand community members participated and
received a free shot in 2007 compared to the eight hundred participants in
2006.

College of the Canyons is located at 26455
Rockwell Canyon Road. For more information about
the free drive thru flu shot clinic, please contact the City’s Community
Services Division at (661)
250-3708.
Car pooling to the College of the Canyons for the free flu shot clinic is
encouraged, along with patience.
