Former Santa Clarita Boys & Girls Club member Cinthya Medrano earned the inaugural Duane R. Harte Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. The scholarship was established in Duane R. Harte’s memory to help young people with the desire to serve in the military.

Medrano is currently pursuing her associate’s degree at College of the Canyons, and is on track to graduate in spring 2018. She plans on enlisting in the Air Force, and attending California State University of Long Beach.

Medrano has been involved with the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley since she became a member in 2011. While at the Boys & Girls Club, Medrano participated in the Power Hour homework program where she received after-school tutoring and mentoring. Medrano remembers bingo with Vera being her favorite activity.

“The Club has become my second home,” said Medrano. “At the Club, I received a lot of love and support that I was not able to receive at home. The Club is very meaningful to me because I was able to create really strong and beautiful bonds with the kids and my coworkers.”

As she got older and attended Hart High School, Medrano volunteered at the Club and then became a junior staff through the City of Santa Clarita’s Youth Employment Services program.

“We are extremely proud of Cinthya for staying the course to achieve her dreams in education and the military,” stated Matthew Nelson, Chief Executive Officer.

This scholarship will help Medrano stay on track to complete her associate’s degree. She has chosen the Air Force for the experience and opportunities it will provide her. After her service in the Air Force Medrano is considering applying for the FBI. She is currently a deputy explorer in the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Department Explorer Academy.

“Thanks to this scholarship I can focus more on my schooling and work less hours,” said Medrano. “I am currently working three jobs: at the Boys & Girls Club, Carl’s Jr. and Jack in the Box.” Medrano and her brother, Victor are the first in their family to attend college.

Harte served in the Navy Reserves for 23 years, retiring in 1990 as a senior chief petty officer. An active member of the Newhall American Legion 507, he worked tirelessly for the betterment of Santa Clarita’s veterans.

Harte earned the title of SCV Man of the Year in 2003 and served on numerous boards and committees over the years, including the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita, SCV Chamber of Commerce, SCV Committee on Aging, SCV Historical Society, SCV Veterans Memorial Committee and the Newhall Redevelopment Committee.

He was also a 17-year member of the Santa Clarita Elks Lodge. Harte passed away November 23, 2015. Harte’s memory will live on in the opportunities this scholarship in his honor provides.

Founded in 1968, the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley provides 1,700 local youth, ages 7-17, with programs that provide a safe and supportive environment, support academic success, and develops character and leadership. Membership is just $60 a year for the first child and $45 for each additional sibling (scholarships available).

The Club’s mission is to “enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.”
