There were 121 young men and 56 young women, 14-20 years of age, who graduated from an intensive, 18-week training program held at the Sheriff’s academy in Whittier, California, and two satellite training facilities in Lancaster and Santa Clarita.

Eleven graduates are scheduled to “post” at Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and serve the residents of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Assistant Sheriff Richard Barrantes was joined by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department executives, including Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Captain Roosevelt Johnson.

Also in attendance were representatives from several local law enforcement agencies and Deputy Explorer Program alumni, to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Deputy Explorer Program and the graduation ceremony for Explorer Academy Class 92.

The Explorer Academy trains young adults who have expressed an interest in pursuing law enforcement as a future career in a myriad of law enforcement topics such as criminal law, laws of arrest, defensive tactics, firearm safety, leadership development, team building, physical training and law enforcement academics.

All recruits must maintain a “C” average throughout the training program. Graduates are eligible to receive 10 elective high school units for their efforts.

The first Sheriff’s Explorer Academy class graduated in 1969 with 16 explorers from Norwalk Sheriff’s Station and the then-known Newhall Sheriff’s Station. Class ’92 had Explorers from 18 Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Stations and 15 local participating police departments.

The Deputy Explorer Program is a career development and education opportunity open to interested youth, ages 14-21, with an interest in pursuing a career in the law enforcement field. Its purpose is to provide training and experiences that assist young adults in maturing and becoming more responsible, compassionate, independent, and self-confident.

All Sheriff’s stations in Los Angeles County have Deputy Explorer posts.
