The following information is a news release.

Smith, who was elected in 2009, is currently serving her second term on the Board and is a parent to two teenage girls who attend Hart High School.

“I know the challenges that our young people face when it comes to getting the best education possible,” Smith said. “Education is more than a passion for me. It is what I’ve devoted my life to.”

Smith who has worked as a policy analyst with the U.S. Department of Education on all levels of education policy said she has seen what works and what doesn’t.

“We need someone to represent us, who understands these complex issues and is ready to tackle them,” Smith said. “I am confident that Johnathon Ervin has what it takes.”

Ervin is a former Board Member for the Muroc Unified School District and Smith said he has the knowledge of local education issues and the experience to solve them in Sacramento.

“He will stand up for our kids, our teachers, and our schools,” Smith said.

Ervin, who announced he was grateful to have Christy’s support, said education is a crucial concern for him.

“A great education from the very beginning gives our young people the opportunity to succeed both in college and in their careers,” Ervin said. “I am committed to making our schools some of the best in California, and I will work tirelessly to get us there.”

About Johnathon Ervin:

Johnathon Ervin grew up in Flint, Michigan, raised by his grandparents on old-fashioned values. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for 10 years and earned a degree in electronics technology. First stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Johnathon was elected President of the Airmen’s Council, where he successfully piloted the “Airmen Against Drunk Driving” program that reduced the DUI rate by over 20% in the first year.

In 2002, Johnathon was selected for assignment to the White House Communications Agency communications position. Johnathon decided to go to Edwards Air Force Base to work on the experimental flight test programs, where his team developed and tested America’s next generation aerospace technology, the Predator and Global Hawk programs. Today, these unmanned aerial vehicles keep our men and women deployed overseas out of harm’s way, and support mortgage-paying jobs here in the 21st District.

Johnathon was honorably discharged from active service in 2007 and chose to re-enlist in the United States Air Forces Reserves. He continues to serve today, and was promoted in December 2014 to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant (E-8).

Ervin’s duty obligations take him to South Korea every year, in show-of-force exercises working directly with Air Force generals. He supervises troops and works to ensure the continued safety of our allies in the region.

Johnathon Ervin is proud to call the Antelope Valley his home for over 13 years. He is a Senior Field Engineer for Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems. He has served as a Planning Commissioner for the City of Lancaster and as a School Board Member for Muroc Joint Unified School District.

He lives in Lancaster with his wife, Cathy – an Air Force veteran herself – and their four children, Johnathon Jr., Jaden, Jaqlynn, and their youngest, Joshua.
