Hospital wins top honors in HealthGrades quality study.
Providence Holy Cross Medical Center might need to make more room in the trophy case. The hospital was honored once again this week as healthcare ratings firm HealthGrades released its 12th annual Hospital Quality in America Study.
While the network of Providence medical centers across the Greater Los Angeles Area earned 23 top HealthGrades ratings, the local Providence Holy Cross Medical Center led the pack, garnering nine five-star ratings. It was recognized for excellence in treatment of heart failure, stroke, pulmonary services, pneumonia, and several other services including gastrointestinal care.
“We’re extremely proud that our hospitals in Southern California were recognized for excellence in so many areas,” said Myron Berdischewsky, M.D., chief medical officer for Providence Health & Services, California. “It is important first for our patients to know they’re getting the best and secondly for consumers in general to know where to find the best medical treatment for their families’ needs.”
The study, the largest annual report of its kind, analyzed patient outcomes in nearly 40 million Medicare hospitalization records from 5,000 hospitals from 2006 to 2008. Notable finding from this year’s study include :
- Across all 17 procedures and diagnoses in which mortality was studied, there was an approximate 72 percent greater chance of surviving in a five-star rated hospital compared to a one-star rated hospital, and a 52 percent greater chance of survival in a 5-star hospital compared to the national average.
- If all hospitals performed at the level of a five-star rated hospital across the 17 procedures and diagnoses studied, 224,537 Medicare lives could potentially have been saved from 2006 through 2008.
“These ratings show our expertise is across-the-board,” Berdischewsky said. “Providence is governed by five core values, one of which is excellence. We strive for excellence in everything we do and we deliver it with our trademark compassion.”
