Providence Holy Cross Honored For Performance Excellence

khts_healthProvidence Holy Cross Medical Center is among the four winners of the Prospector Awards bestowed by the California Awards for Performance Excellence, known as CAPE.

The awards program, which emulates the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Program, recognizes organizations that demonstrate superior performance in seven key business areas: leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, measurement, analysis and knowledge management, workforce focus, process management and results.

Brent Duggleby, chairman of the CAPE Council, applauded the winners.

“The commitment of these organizations to the principles and core elements of the Baldrige criteria is truly inspiring to everyone,” Duggleby said. “Each organization that participates in the process gains and these organizations that are being recognized are exceptional examples of excellence.”

Founded in 1992, the California Council for Excellence is a nonprofit educational foundation dedicated to helping California-based organizations achieve world-class results through the principles and criteria of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. The Baldrige Award is the only formal recognition of the performance excellence of both public and private U.S. organizations given by the U.S. president.

“We are especially proud of this award because it recognizes the work we do and the results we achieve,” said Larry Bowe, chief executive of Providence Holy Cross. “The Providence goal is to continually strive to improve upon excellence. Our staff members know that every suggestion made is seriously reviewed – and their ideas are the reasons Holy Cross excels.”

Providence Holy Cross, celebrating its 50th year and nearing completion of a new four-story patient care tower, is renowned for its emergency and trauma services, as well as its cardiology, neurology, pulmonology, maternity and oncology care. Last week, the hospital was recognized by the Hospital Association of Southern California as one of the top 10 hospitals in the association’s Southern California Patient Safety Collaborative for performance in clinical outcomes measured by the nationally-recognized Surgical Care Improvement Project.

The Mission Hills medical center, dedicated to excellence and to compassionate care, was the first community hospital in Los Angeles County to receive Magnet Status for Nursing Excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

Bowe, Associate Administrator Jonathan Emerson and Kaveh Houshmand Azad, of the hospital operations excellence department, will accept the award April 1 in San Diego at the California Council for Excellence annual Best Practices and Awards Ceremony.
Also honored with 2010 Prospector Award are the state Department of Toxic Substances Control.; Excelsior Charter Schools, Victorville; and the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division Logistics and Industrial Operations Directorate, China Lake. California State University, San Marcos, Division of Finance and Administrative Service will be recognized with a Challenge Award.
