L.A. County Public Works recommended lowering the speed limit on San Francisquito Canyon Road in Saugus and Kavenagh Lane in Stevenson Ranch — supervisors approved their recommendation during the April 18 meeting.
“The county first receives a request from CHP an assessment on a particular road,” said Michael Kaspar, public information officer. “Public works then conducts a traffic and engineering study to determine the proper speed.”
The motion established a 40 mph speed limit on San Francisquito Canyon Road between Stator Lane and Mile Marker 15.
The item lowered the speed limit to 35 mph on Kavenagh Lane between Mallory Drive and Hemingway Avenue, in Stevenson Ranch.
Both roads are in unincorporated Los Angeles County and are under the regulation of L.A. County Public Works.
This action implemented traffic regulations to support traffic safety and enhance traffic flow, according to county officials.
Public Works conducted a traffic and engineering study — the speed limit changes were recommended based on the ‘85 percentile rule.’
“The traffic study determines the average speed range for 85 percent of drivers during the study period,” said Kasper.
There will be no impact to the County General Fund. Sufficient funds are included in the Road Fund Fiscal Year 2016-17 Budget to cover the minor costs of removing and installing the necessary signs and markings
An excellent and much needed change.
