Due to recent fires destroying brush, many places in Santa Clarita face a risk of mudslides and flooding. To combat this, the city of Santa Clarita and officials from Los Angeles county are taking measures to mitigate or prevent damage before it happens.

Concerned residents are encouraged to call fire stations throughout the city in advance, to check for sandbag availability. Not all stations in the area are capable of offering sandbags.

Residents are also encouraged to take further steps to prepare property against damage. Precautions include planting vegetation on large bare areas to prevent mudslides, cleaning private drains and gutters and inspect sloped areas for signs of slope movement.

Officials encouraged residents to avoid areas that are at risk for mudslides and flooding.

Evacuation orders will be issued if county officials believe the risk is large enough, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will be responsible for issuing the evacuation orders and informing residents of the orders.

Be sure to follow local news, such as KHTS Hometown Station AM 1220 and FM 98.1, for emergency updates.
