The Great California Shakeout reminds millions every year about  the importance of being ready for the next “big one.”

This Thursday, October 20, at 10:20 a.m., thousands of Santa Clarita students and residents will, “Drop, take cover, and hold on,” during the Great California Shakeout.

Local business and organizations will also participate in the drill. KHTS AM-1220 is hosting a brief simulation by broadcasting a live countdown before the earthquake drill during “SCV Sheriff Talk.”

This is part of the larger drill that will take place throughout the state where over 10 million people will participate.

The Great Shakeout is an annual drill in which participants practice what to do during an earthquake and the evacuating procedure for afterwards.

Santa Clarita as a whole participates in this drill every year, and last year all three SCV library branches participated in the drill as well.

Schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District will hold the drill as they have in years past. Golden Valley High School is known for taking the drill one step further. Golden Valley staff and students “will respond to a drill where they find cover, evacuate and then assess, with several students being “left behind” as victims,” school district officials say. This drill comes only a week after Golden Valley held an unannounced “Lockdown” Drill in efforts to prepare students for a situation with an armed person on campus.

Holding the drill helps Santa Clarita Valley residents to be more prepared in the situation of an earthquake, a probable incident in the near future for California.

The Great California Shakeout website provides useful information about what to do during an earthquake and how to be more prepared.

According to its website:

If you are inside a building, move no more than a few steps, then Drop, Cover and Hold On:
DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you!)
Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and
HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.
Stay indoors till the shaking stops and you are sure it is safe to exit. In most buildings in California you are safer if you stay where you are until the shaking stops.
If you are outdoors when the shaking starts, you should find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, streetlights, and power lines, then Drop, Cover and Hold On. Stay there until the shaking stops.
If you are driving, pull over to a clear location, stop and stay there with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops. Once the shaking stops, proceed with caution and avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged.

The site also encourages families to create or plan family disaster plans. For information about the event visit www.shakeout.org.

  1. You might better suggest people Take COVER by getting NEXT a sturdy desk or table.

Far more people are rescued next to sturdy furniture than under it. If under a desk the roof weight simply collapses the desk on top of you, Next to the desk the roof beams can be supported by the crushed desk thus creating what professional rescuers call the triangle of life. It is here that many victims are found alive
