Two-thirds of all drowning deaths occur between the months of May and August, most often on weekends, according to a Nixle report from Sheriff’s Department officials.

The warning came in the form of a top-10 safety tips for parents and children.

  1. When in or around open bodies of water, actively supervise your children by giving them your undivided attention.
  2. Do not leave your child unattended in the bathtub. A drowning can happen in as little as 20 seconds, even in water that is only inches deep.
  3. When children are swimming and several adults are present, designate an adult to supervise the children which will prevent lapses in supervision.  Hiring a lifeguard is a great alternative when having a pool party where children are present.
  4. If your child is learning to swim make sure they are wearing a flotation device which is Coast Guard approved.
  5. A pool fence is a must!  A fence can deter or prevent children from entering the pool area when there is no adult or lifeguard present.  Teach your children to never go through any pool gates when they are closed.  Placing a lock on your pool gate can be another great precautionary measure.
  6. Have your child swim at a depth that is safe for them.  Beginner swimmers should stay in the shallow end.
  7. Watch your child at all times.  Avoid looking at your cell phone or electronic devices while your child is in the pool.  Drownings are silent and occur very rapidly.
  8. Always obey all pool rules.
  9. Do not dive in shallow waters or in waters you are unable to tell the depth.
  10. Learn CPR.  It will give you great piece of mind.  Local hospitals, fire departments and the American Red cross offer CPR training.

By working together as a community, we can educate ourselves and our children on the safety of swimming.  For further information on swimming safety tips go to www.kidshealth.org.
