The company updated several portions of the environmental review submitted to Los Angeles County, and it’s being re-submitted for public comment.

The recirculation of the report was in response to discussion about the landfill’s efforts to lessen community impact on traffic and air quality, according to county officials.

The report also explains several alternatives to the current proposal that were looked at, as well as a smaller expansion option for the current landfill.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 15 at West Ranch High School, where residents can listen to a presentation on the alternatives and mitigation efforts being undertaken by the landfill, as well as ask questions.

In the most recent proposal before the county, the landfill sought to double its capacity to take trash within its existing footprint, a 640-acre site about three miles west of Interstate 5, at 29201 Henry Mayo Drive. (The landfill currently sits on about 257 acres.)

“This Partially Recirculated Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) addresses the potential environmental impacts of the Proposed Project, and provides additional analysis for certain resource areas previously evaluated in the Original Draft EIR,” according to Chiquita Canyon officials. The Partially Recirculated Draft EIR also includes two sections that are intended to provide additional information about the Proposed Project that are in addition to the Original Draft EIR.

“As part of the continued environmental review process, Chiquita Canyon is providing updated analysis and reports on our future operations,” according to a statement from Chiquita. “Our basic operations remain the same as they have for more than four decades with oversight and reporting by more than two dozen environmental and regulatory agencies.”

The Project Alternatives chapter included in the Original Draft EIR considered five alternatives. Three alternatives were analyzed, while two alternatives were considered but eliminated. The recirculated Alternatives chapter considers six alternatives: the three alternatives analyzed in the Original Draft EIR, the two alternatives previously considered but eliminated, plus one new reduced-size project alternative.

The comment period ends Jan. 9.
