At Tuesday’s Planning Commission meeting, a Newhall church will continue its pursuit to facilitate a K-8 elementary school and preschool on its property.  

Back in January, Seventh Day Adventist Church, located on Valley Street, filed an application to continue running both schools. The original minor use permit from May 2003 expired this June.

During the church’s recent application renewal, residents from the surrounding community sent seven letters of opposition, mostly complaining of increased noise and traffic.  

This sent the matter to the Planning Commission, which first considered the church’s renewal on July 20.  

After hearing public comment at that meeting, the Commission requested that City staff come back with information addressing the residents’ concerns and an adequate figure for the number of students both schools could hold.  

City staff has prepared its updated report, and is now recommending the Planning Commission approve the church’s request to house both schools on its property, holding a maximum of 218 students.  

“The mission of Seventh Day Adventist Church and the schools is consistent with this community,” said Sally Swiatek, program director of A Little Patch of Earth, which is set to serve as the church’s preschool.  

“It’s just a beautiful partnership,” she said.  

Tuesday’s meeting will also involve the second public discussion of the draft of One Valley One Vision, the City of Santa Clarita’s updated general plan. City staff will continue its presentation from the October 5 meeting on Tuesday before the Planning Commission takes public comment on the bulky document.  

On December 7, the City staff is expected to deliver a presentation to the Commission on the document’s subject areas of water resources, climate change, greenhouse gas and air quality.  

Tuesday’s meeting begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
