Three playoff rounds decide winner.
In an up and down tournament, the AT&T Champions Classic offered more than enough drama on its final day.
At the end of the final round, Loren Roberts and Tom Purtzer were tied at -10, forcing a playoff round on the 18th hole to determine the winner. That would have been too easy for these Champions’ Tour stars however, and so it took three playoff rounds to finally see Tom Purtzer take the prize.
He was emotional after his win, which was his second at Valencia Country Club. When asked about his successes here, Purtzer replied “I’m moving here!”
He took home the title after a brilliant putt to stay alive in the second playoff round. He also won the big check…$240,000.
Purtzer said that he would indeed be back next year, to defend his title.
Roberts came in second place, followed by David Eger (-9), Andy Bean (-8) and the man who started the day in the lead, Hale Irwin (-8).
This wraps up a successful tournament, which will be back in Santa Clarita for at least one more year.
