Pyro Fans Face Fines, Jail

All fireworks are illegal in city limits and unincorporated county areas. Period.

The county and city are teaming up to make sure everyone has a safe Fourth of July, clamping down on illegal fireworks in unincorporated areas and within Santa Clarita city limits.

All fireworks, even those labeled “Safe and Sane” are illegal in Santa Clarita in the unincorporated areas of the county surrounding the Santa Clarita Valley.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich and L.A. County Fire Chief Michael Freeman shared the podium Wednesday morning at Station 124 in Stevenson Ranch, the site of at least two major fires in recent years,  to emphasize the importance of fire safety and the possible penalties faced by offenders.

“Last year there were 43 fires caused by fireworks,” Antonovich said. “Fighting those fire cost the taxpayers $600,000. All kinds of fireworks are illegal and people using them can find themselves facing fines of up to $1,000 and time in Lee Baca’s county jail.”

Chief Freeman said that not only is the fire danger great with high temperatures and dry fuel, but also added that fire resources are already stretched thin.

“Right now, we have upwards of 200 Los Angeles County firefighters in Northern California, along with their equipment,” he said. “We will be bringing in 180 additional personnel and support staff for the holiday, but we need the public’s help in keeping the holiday safe.”

Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Captain Anthony LaBerge said that deputies will be out in force during the holiday, with special units on the lookout for explosive activity.

The officials encouraged the public to attend professional fireworks shows instead of trying to create their own hazardous entertainment. Free shows are being held at the Valencia Town Center and at Richard Rioux Park in Stevenson Ranch.

Antonovich encouraged residents who see illegal fireworks to call the sheriff’s department tip line at 284-2-TIP. Anyone wishing to surrender their illegal fireworks can call Sgt. Gregg Lewison at the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s station; call 799-5158 to make arrangements.
