Real Life Comedy For Real Life Heroes

standupguyslogoRobert G. Lee has been a standup comedian for about 25 years and a member of the group The Standup Guys for about two and a half years. His partners – comedians Kenn Kington and Bob Smiley – cover the whole spectrum of comedy.

“Bob is the young up-and-comer, Kenn is the middle-aged guy with young kids and I’m the old vet,” Lee explained.

The Standup Guys will be performing May 18 in a benefit for Habitat For Heroes, a program of Habitat For Humanity Santa Clarita/San Fernando Valley that rehabilitates homes of veterans. This particular fundraiser will cover costs of renovating the American Legion building in downtown Newhall, next to the new library.

H4Hlogo“It’s a three-headliner show and we hit all the demographics,” Lee continued. “It’s all clean comedy.”

The performance will be held at the Real Life Church on Newhall Ranch Road, but don’t expect preachy jokes.

”We do come from the Christian world view, but we don’t proselytize,” Lee said. “We’re a show for all ages. If you sit and watch a TV show with your kid and laugh about it, bring ‘em. If you perform for junior high kids, you have to do junior high material, but when a junior high kid comes into a full audience, the intelligence level rises and they really get into the program. That’s my thrill, watching a lot of teenagers enjoy an adult show. They see you can be funny without being dirty.

“They say ‘I like this new style,’ he added. “We’re strange and unusual.”

Lee is also hoping that the audience provides a laugh track for the group’s newest comedy webisode, as well as the new CD he’ll be recording that night.

“Gotta work the internet, Twitter, YouTube,” he explained. “They dragged me in kicking and screaming. And if we sell out that show, we’ll do another.”

Lee and Kington plan on showing up the next morning with sleeves rolled up to work at the American Legion, where painters and craftspeople will be working to refurbish the building and meeting hall.

Mike Mizrahi of The Gas Co. (one of the evening’s sponsors) said that it should be noted that Lee not only agreed to a reduced performance fee (with the other two comedians), but has also purchased his own sponsorship, joining a group who have covered the costs of the show. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Heroes. Mizrahi said the group has a goal of clearing $40,000 – $50,000 for the cause.

Tickets for the event are $15 until May 15, when they go up to $17.50. VIP seats are available for $20 and can be purchased by visiting habitatscv.org/events or calling (818) 884-8808.
