Pork Products Recalled For Misbranding And Undeclared Allergens

Recall-SidebarBaLe Meat Processing and Wholesale, Inc., a Chicago, Ill., establishment is recalling approximately 13,200 pounds of various raw and ready-to-eat pork roll products because of misbranding and an undeclared allergen, wheat, which is not declared on the label.

The products subject to recall include:
• BaLe “Cha Bi (Skin Pork Patty Roll)”
• BaLe “Cha Lua (Steamed Pork Patty Roll)”
• BaLe “Cha Chien (Fried Pork Patty Roll)”
• BaLe “Cha Hue (Spicy Pork Patty Roll)”
• BaLe “Cha Lua La Chuoi (Steamed Pork Roll Wrapped in Banana Leaves)”
• BaLe “Cha Lua (Raw Pork Roll finished product)”

The products affected may have been sold in various vacuum-sealed package sizes including: .42-pound pieces shipped in 42-pound cases, .84-pound pieces shipped in 42-pound cases, 1.87-pound pieces shipped in 56-pound cases or 5-pound pieces shipped in 30-pound cases.

The products bear the establishment number “EST. 18442” inside the USDA mark of inspection on the label. The products were shipped to retail locations in Oakland, California; Denver, Colorado; Chicago, Illinois; Dorchester, Massachusetts; and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The problem was discovered by FSIS personnel during label verification procedures at the facility. Wheat is a sub-ingredient in the baking powder used to make the products and is not listed on the final label. The discrepancy may have occurred during the switch to a new ingredient supplier last September. FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at: www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp.

Consumers and media with questions about the recall should contact company Secretary Tim Nguyen at (773) 612-9543.

Consumers with food safety questions can “Ask Karen,” the FSIS virtual representative available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov or via smartphone at m.askkaren.gov. “Ask Karen” live chat services are available Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET. The toll-free USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854) is available in English and Spanish and can be reached from l0 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday.
