Today’s recalls and product warnings include certain models of Water Pik oral hygiene products, several brands of nationally-distributed dry dog food and some small packages of snack foods.

WATER PIK

Water Pik, Inc., a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative personal healthcare products, will replace certain SinuSense™ Water Pulsator nasal irrigation devices it manufactured between May, 2010 and July, 2011.

This program is being offered in response to consumer complaints that water being used in the Pulsator seeped into the battery compartment leading to battery corrosion, possible reservoir contamination and the need to prematurely replace batteries. Water Pik has reviewed the complaints, tested the devices and confirmed that in some of the subject devices water can get into the battery compartment.

Water Pik will replace SinuSense™ Water Pulsator devices manufactured between May, 2010 and July, 2011 that experience water intrusion into the battery compartment. If the device is used with batteries other than the alkaline type (as supplied with the unit) and if the battery compartment cap is opened or improperly installed, then saline may come into contact with the battery compartment. This may result in the possible accidental spilling of contaminated water into the device reservoir.

Products manufactured after July, 2011 are not affected by this notice. Consumers can identify the manufacturing date of their unit by the presence of a fill door (pictured below) on the side ofthe reservoir. If your unit has the side door, it need not be replaced.

CACAO NIBS SNACK PACKS

FunFresh Foods, Inc. of San Clemente, California in consultation with the FDA is voluntarily recalling a single lot of its 6 ounce packages of FunFresh Foods™ World Berries™ Organic “Cacao Nibs” because they may be contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria (E. Coli O157:H7).

E. coli O157:H7 causes a diarrheal illness often with bloody stools.  Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).  HUS is most likely to occur in young children and the elderly.  The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.

Approximately 500 packages of affected product were distributed from April 12 through April 17, 2012 from this lot and as of the date of this release, 263 of these packages have already been retrieved from retail stores.  Product was distributed to health and natural food retail stores located in the following states:  AK, AR, AZ, CA, CT, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NM, OH, OK, OR, SC, SC, TN, TX, WA, WI, and WV.

The product comes in a 6 oz pouch with the World Berries™ logo identified as Organic Cacao Nibs with the following UPC code 632474929022, affected lot code 161104 and the use by date for products for the affected lot 04/14, which are laser etched on the vertical edge of the back panel.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this product.

The potential for contamination was identified through the company’s own audit testing of finished product which detected the presence of E. coli 0157:H7.  Production and distribution of the product has been suspended while FDA and the company continue their investigation.  No other lots of this product and no other FunFresh Foods products are affected by this recall.

Consumers should not consume the product.  Consumers who have purchased 6 ounce packages of “Cacao Nibs” are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Alternatively, consumers can call the company which will arrange for a full refund and for retrieval of affected products.  Consumers may contact the company between Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time at 1-800-232-8619.

DIAMOND PET FOODS

Diamond Pet Foods today announced that it is expanding a voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulas manufactured between December 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination.

In April 2012, Diamond Pet Foods initiated three voluntary recalls of Diamond manufactured dry dog food. Although none of the additional products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. Diamond Pet Foods is coordinating efforts with federal and state health and regulatory agencies and decided to independently expand the recall to ensure the safety and well-being of customers and their pets.

The company stated: “We have taken corrective actions at our Gaston, S.C., facility and voluntarily expanded the recall out of concern for our customers and their pets.”

Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product. People who believe they may have been exposed to Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are more likely to be affected by Salmonella include infants, children younger than 5 years old, organ transplant patients, people with HIV/AIDS and people receiving treatment for cancer. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have received a limited number of reports of salmonellosis, the illness caused by Salmonella. We are working with the CDC, but due to patient confidentiality, we cannot comment further.
