Red Cross To Honor Hometown Heroes Sept. 11

khts_inthecommunityA celebration of local heroes will be held September 11, sponsored by the Santa Clarita  American Red Cross, at the Valencia Hyatt Regency. The 7:00 a.m. breakfast will include special recognition ceremonies for volunteers from the Santa Clarita area who have stepped up and given service in several areas, all with the simple goal of helping another person.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca will be the keynote speaker at the breakfast. Television newsman Rick Chambers will serve as master of ceremonies. The breakfast will also pay tribute to victims of 9/11.

Honorees do not have to be Red Cross volunteers to be nominated. Previous winners have included teen counselors, paramedics, sheriff’s deputies, educators and volunteers at horse therapy facilities.

“We are so grateful to all of our Red Cross volunteers,” said Donna Nuzzi, Council Chair of the Santa Clarita Service Area. “People who feed others who are hungry, clothe those who need clothing and help house those who need shelter; people who care for others: the dedicated men and women of the American Red Cross.”

Disaster relief from the Red Cross in Santa Clarita takes many forms.  “Hometown Heroes” are people who have displayed heroic or humanitarian actions in the Santa Clarita Valley, people whose compassionate, caring and charitable actions exemplify the true spirit of the American Red Cross, people we all know across Santa Clarita.

Nominees are being selected in the following categories; First Responders, Youth (through 17), Adult (18 to 59), Animal, Educator (classroom), Medical, Workplace, Military, Youth Sports Mentor, Senior (60 plus).

Sponsorships are available. For information or tickets to the breakfast, call the Santa Clarita American Red Cross office at (661) 259-1805.

“The care of our clients takes many caring volunteers, and we want to recognize, honor, and thank them,” Nuzzi added.

To become a Red Cross volunteer, learn more about classes or blood donations or to make a donation, contact the Santa Clarita Valley Service Center at 259-1805, or log on to the website at www.heroes.hometownstation.com.

Governed by volunteers and supported by community donations, the American Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles is dedicated to saving lives while helping people prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters.
