Providence Valley Hospitals Earn Top Awards For Maternity Care

All three Providence medical centers in the San Fernando Valley recently received Maternity Care Excellence Awards from HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent health care ratings organization.

Providence Holy Cross, Providence Saint Joseph and Providence Tarzana medical centers were named among the top hospitals in the nation for quality outcomes in maternity care

“This is great. We know we have the best physicians, nurses and staff, but it’s nice to be recognized like this,” said Barry Wolfman, chief executive of Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank. “The ones who really benefit from our efforts to be the best are our new moms and their babies.”

Last year, a total of 7,677 babies were born at the three hospitals, which are operated by the not-for-profit Providence Health & Services.

The Sixth Annual “HealthGrades Women’s Health in American Hospitals” study analyzed patient outcomes for maternity care.

Study findings included the following:

  • The difference in quality of care between maternity programs is substantial for both vaginal and C-section deliveries: the best-performing hospitals had 52 percent fewer maternal complications among women who had vaginal births compared to poor-performing hospitals and 76 percent fewer complications among women who had C-sections. Patient-choice C-sections had the largest difference at 84 percent between best- and poor-performing hospitals.
  • If all hospitals among the 19 states studied performed at the level of the best-performing hospitals from 2005 through 2007, 182,129 women might have avoided developing one or more major obstetrics complications while hospitalized.
  • Best-performing hospitals had a 56 percent lower rate of neonatal mortality related to low birth weights compared to poor-performing hospitals.

“Choosing the hospital where you will have your baby is a major decision in a woman’s life,” said Dr. Rick May, senior physician consultant with HealthGrades and a study co-author. “This study highlights the differences in quality between hospitals and gives women information to make informed choices about where they will have her babies.”

In the study, HealthGrades analyzed approximately 13 million medical records from 2005-07 in more than 1,500 hospitals and identified the Valley’s three Providence Health & Services medical centers among the 218 hospitals awarded five stars for maternity care.

Providence Tarzana and Providence Saint Joseph operate renowned neonatal intensive-care units and, in 2010, Providence Holy Cross will open a 12-bed NICU and a new Women’s Pavilion within its 136-bed patient care wing now under construction.

Providence Tarzana provides special care for babies with extraordinary health needs. A dedicated pediatrics ambulance equipped for newborns offers immediate medical care en route to the medical center.

Providence Holy Cross in Mission Hills has earned Nurse Magnet Status for nursing excellence and has received the national Baby Friendly designation for the maternity team’s efforts to help new mothers learn to breastfeed.
