Renowned Neighborhood Makeover Program Returns To Canyon Country

Santa Clarita’s Extreme Neighborhood Makeover Block Party returns Saturday April 9 at noon when the grass-roots campaign works to beautify 300 homes in Canyon Country.

The event is orchestrated by the City in partnership with several sponsors, including the Sheriff’s and Fire departments, KHTS AM-1220, local water agencies, Grace Baptist Church volunteers, nonprofits and licensed contractors.

The program launched in 2008 and has since brought a new sheen to neighborhoods in Saugus, Canyon Country and Newhall. This year’s target area will be the 27400 block of Plumwood Avenue next to Canyon Springs Community School.

Its mission is to help neighborhoods take a proactive approach with residents whose homes are in violation of the municipal code.

Such infractions include trash bins in public view, inoperable vehicles in the driveway and garage conversions that lack the needed permit.

By setting up informational booths, the City and sponsors aim to rally the troops, so to speak, by educating the residents on cost-effective ways to beautify their neighborhood within the laws of the City.

“As a homeowner in an older neighborhood in Canyon County, the Extreme Neighborhood Makeover is a testament to the community’s willingness to come together for the benefit of our local neighborhoods,” said Linda Garza, whose Bernina Avenue block was targeted by the program in 2008.

The program, which works with neighborhoods over a period of years, has received statewide recognition, earning the Helen Putnam Award in 2010.
