Residents To Meet Over Perceived Dump Siting

City stresses need for accurate information and education.

Opponents of a proposed solid waste recovery facility planned between Golden Valley Road and Placerita Canyon Road will meet on Monday evening, February 25, 2006 at the Moose Lodge at 7pm. A follow up meeting will be held on Tuesday Night, February 26, 2008 at 7 p.m. at the Friendly Valley Multipurpose Room.

A flyer claiming that from 6 to 9 million pounds of waste will be processed daily, brought to the site by 300 to 450 trucks has been circulating, the figures escalating with consecutive versions of the flyer.

Darin Seegmiller of the city’s Community Development Department has received several e-mails from Canyon Country residents opposed to the project. Seegmiller is working with Burrtec officials to ensure that correct information is distributed.

City spokeswoman Gail Ortiz said that residents may be hypersensitive to dump issues because of the fight against Cemex and Elsmere Canyon, but that educating the public was a priority of both the city and Burrtec, which is building the facility.

Ortiz said that all of the waste collected in the valley would be brought to the facility for sorting, where recyclables would be removed and the leftover refuse would then be taken to dumps located in the Antelope Valley or Chiquita Canyon, which are outside the city limits.

The property, which is currently zoned business park and residential would require Burrtec to request a zone change and general plan amendment to give it the industrial/commercial zoning required for siting of a materials recycling facility.
