Retiring City Attorney Praises Santa Clarita

CarlNewtonFor 23 years Carl Newton has been Santa Clarita’s City Attorney, overseeing its rapid development and changing political climate. In the new year that is expected to change, however, as Newton will hand over his multiple duties to Assistant City Attorney Joseph Montes.

As Newton recalls, this hefty workload suited him perfectly; in the past, he has held multiple City Attorney positions: Manhattan Beach/Azusa and Manhattan Beach/Downey, respectively. Even so, Santa Clarita’s growth was plenty to handle.

“The volume of work in Santa Clarita has been such since 1994 that I have not taken on other cities,” said Newton while comparing his duties in more established cities.

In working diligently to match the City’s growth with legal expertise, Newton credits his co-workers for any perceived success he has had.

“The staff in Santa Clarita has just been outstanding. George Caravalho as City Manager for many years, and then Ken Pulskamp have brought with them a group of department heads who are just of excellent caliber.”

During a period in public office that exceeds two decades, Newton has an unwavering fondness for the city he’s served.

“Santa Clarita is a very sophisticated city. Probably the most intelligent and highly-educated group of people in a community as I’ve ever experienced.”

Although he’s set to resign his post, Newton trusts Assistant City Attorney Joseph Montes is ready to take the reins.

“He’s very familiar with the City and a very able lawyer. I know he will do a good job.”

Newton will officially retire on January 1, 2011.
