A large scale version of a child’s erector set can already be seen taking shape 36 feet in the air at the corner of Lyons Avenue and Main Street in Old Town Newhall.

“We’ve installed 16 columns already. What we call the east side of the building. And today we have 10 more columns showing up on the west side,” said Corder.

According to the Project Manager people don’t too excited about watching the installation of underground utilities, water lines and slabs. But columns generate excitement. That’s the building taking its form.

“We did the first installation a couple of weeks ago and we’ve been working on that. It actually happened so fast people didn’t get a chance to look at it,” Corder said.

The Project Manager is proud to show off every phase of construction. In fact, he admits to watching the 24 hour web cam during his off hours.

The 36-foot columns can only hint at a second level that will soon hold the fiction and non-fiction collections, Reference and Technology Area, Quiet Reading, Local History, Small Group Meeting Rooms and the Current Magazine Fireplace Reading Room.6_7_Erection_WD__0047

Concrete slab requires one to use their imagination to see a future Children’s Library, Teen Area, Technology Center, Community Meeting Room, Browsing and Reading Lounge, Homework Center, Express Check, Friends of Library Sale Area, Exhibition Gallery, and Staff Workspaces.

After erection of the columns, six weeks of welding will follow. Then there is the pouring of the second deck, followed by installing the chimney and tower features.
