Deputies Nab Juveniles Suspected in Rock Throwing Assaults

ImagePatrol deputies and members of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station's Community Interaction Team (CIT) arrested three Canyon Country youths on assault charges Thursday night. The youths are suspected in several incidents of rock throwing assaults on residents in the 25300 block of Camp Plenty Road, dating back to May 2007.

Members of the Community Interaction Team conducted several covert operations in the area and bicycle patrols over the past several weeks in an aggressive effort to apprehend the subjects. The subjects increased their assaults starting in early July, resulting in more than fifteen separate responses by deputy personnel and several victims who reported being struck by rocks. During some of the recent calls, residents even reported hearing individuals on the rooftops of the complex. During one incident on July 14th, deputies in the area responded quickly and were on scene while rocks were still being thrown or launched by the subjects from the wash area. A containment was established and the Sheriff's Aero Bureau responded, but the subjects managed to evade arrest until last night.

During last night's operation, deputies were already in position when the calls came in. The pre-deployment of personnel equipped with forward looking infrared (FLIR) technology, coupled with the use of Aero Bureau's Air-29 helicopter and the fact that patrols in the area had already been increased in response to other incidents, aided in the success of the operation. Two of the individuals were taken into custody near the wash and a third attempted to flee on a bicycle, but was apprehended as he ran from the backyard of a nearby residence. Station officials credit the active involvement of the community in helping deputies make the arrests. "These types of attacks can be particularly dangerous, said Captain La Berge.

One of the rocks narrowly missed striking a two week old baby." These deputies did a great job and residents stayed involved, quickly and thoroughly reporting the incidents as they occurred," he added.

All three subjects, MW/15, MW/15, MW/16, were booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on Felony Charges of Assault with Deadly Weapon and misdemeanor charges of Resist/Obstruct a Peace Officer. They were later transferred to Sylmar Juvenile Hall for housing pending future court proceedings.

Detectives from the Career Offenders Burglary Robbery Apprehension Team (COBRA) are handling the ongoing investigation.
