Round Up Hazardous Waste

Residents to Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste, Saturday, April 14, 2007.

The City of Santa Clarita, in conjunction with Los Angeles County, will offer residents the opportunity to safely dispose of household hazardous waste and e-waste, free of charge, during a county-wide Hazardous Waste Roundup on Saturday, April 14, 2007, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The free Roundup will be held at the College of the Canyons in the south parking lot, located at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road.

“Many common household products pose a danger to the environment and the public if they end up in our landfills or down our sinks and storm drains,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean. “The Roundups offer residents a convenient, safe way to discard of these products that are hazardous if not disposed of properly.”

Residents are encouraged to dispose of hazardous waste (antifreeze, car batteries, used motor oil, paint, pesticides, medications. etc.), universal waste (household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, mercury thermostats, etc.), and electronic waste (TVs, monitors, computers, VCRs, cell phones, etc.) for free.
Community members may bring up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of household hazardous waste per vehicle to the Roundup.

Explosives, radioactive materials, tires, and business waste will be not be accepted.

Since the first Household Hazardous Waste Roundup in 1988, more than 756,000 households have participated in the weekly Roundups.  Residents have dropped off more than 3.9 million gallons of paint, 901,000 gallons of used motor oil, 169 tons of dry-cell batteries, 64 tons of used oil filters and thousands of pounds of other miscellaneous household hazardous waste items. More than 80 percent of the household hazardous waste and 100 percent of the electronic waste collected by the program is recycled.

The Countywide Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Roundup Program is brought to you by the County of Los Angeles and presented by the Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County in cooperation with the City of Santa Clarita and the neighboring cities of Lancaster and Palmdale.
