Panel Will Tackle Prison Policy, Fiscal Issues
Sacramento – Assemblywoman Sharon Runner (R-Lancaster) today was named vice chair of a special committee on Correctional Policy and Fiscal Issues to review legislation introduced in the Assembly’s special session on prisons convened in June.
"I believe this is a great position for me" Runner said. "The high desert is heavily affected by the state’s prison policies and my appointment as vice chair to this committee provides the Antelope and Victor Valleys with a greater voice while we craft the future of our state’s prison policies."
Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) appointed committee members who also include Assemblyman Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), who will chair the committee, Assembly members Karen Bass (D-Culver City), Rudy Bermudez (D-Norwalk), Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park), John Laird (D-Santa Cruz), Sally Leiber (D-Mountain View), Todd Spitzer (R-Tustin) and Michael Villines (R-Fresno).
The committee will review both the policy and fiscal issues raised by the Governor’s proposals during the 2005-06 Second Extraordinary Session.
The special session on corrections was convened on June 27, 2006 by Speaker Nunez and hearings on the measures are expected to start this month. "California’s prison system is in crisis," Runner continued. "I am looking forward to being on the front lines of dealing with this critical issue."
